A short story about food, belonging, and seeking home. Text your friend, call your mum, and search for congee on this rainy night.

Music included. Story, art, music and code by me. Coding advice by Archbang.

Placed top 20 (18th) in the global 2020 Interactive Fiction Competition. Some nice words from the reviewers:

  • "The story features strong, assured writing, with great sense of place and character. And the sleek interactive design with chat window choices and occasional visual asides sets just the right tone to deliver the mood and message of the narrative."
  • "This honestly feels like what all the tiny, evocative Twine games aspire to be and it does it so well. For such a small game, it has a lot of visuals but they are so effectively woven into the passages, it isn’t distracting it all. Great atmosphere, so much care taken with each passage, and really cute and heartwarming ending. Never had Congee, but now I want to try it! Please play!"
  • "I absolutely loved this game. I felt the story so much. And the characters were so wonderfully written. The audio and graphics were excellent. I don't know what to say beyond that this game was amazing and I 100% recommend it."
  • "Visually, the game is gorgeous, with animated line drawings, animated color scenes, and beautiful faux text messages."

I'm indian and this was so comforting :') Nothing hits the same as a warm bowl of congee (or kanji, as i call it) when you're sick

I really enjoyed your piece and am using it in a college class presentation on digital fiction. This is such a heartwarming and layered story that has inspired me to try it myself. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!

I miss my mom after playing this gameT T

As a Chinese player, I feel a warmth after playing this game. I also do love my mother's skinny egg and meat porridge very much, it is sold outside in takeaways, but no skinny egg and meat porridge is better than my mother's. She made it not only delicious in flavor, but also the taste of home. I love her.

Thank you for playing, it means a lot! I hope you enjoy your mother's congee.

Loved this! From a chinese immigrant this is so relatable,  i still remember eating congee at china after finishing school , one of my favorite comfort foods<3

Is there anything after the "Bar blues" part?

Yes! If you scroll down to the bottom there should be link to proceed.

Hi there! This is my favorite game made with Twine! I'm currently working on a video talking about low-code to no code game development and I'd like to know if I can feature this game in the video with credit, of course,  thanks!

This was a heart-warming story of the warmth and love of home and cooking.  I loved every moment of it and now I want to make congee. ❤

(+1)

I hope you made some delicious congee. :-)

I hope too when the weather gets colder. 🥰

Oh no way! I moved from Hong Kong to the UK about a year ago for university, and this reminds me of the time when I was feeling a bit sick and made congee for myself. Rice cookers are really life savers in this situation. I really loved this though, and there's a strange joy in realising that there are other people who find the same things weird about the UK as me.

Thank you so much for playing and glad this spoke to your experience!

I'm not Chinese but as a kid in an immigrant family this gave a lot of very cozy vibes to me, sometimes you just want to be around the familiar. 💖

That was so touching and beautiful! It's a really relatable feeling to anyone who has lived far from home.
